Christopher Munch’s film is a dreamy, intense and finally elusive look at the Yosemite Valley Railroad and at a young man who vows to save it from oblivion. — NY Times
STEVE’S TAKE: Beautiful cinematography, a powerful musical score and a story dear to my heart: The last year of the Yosemite Valley Railroad and the young man who tried to save it. Throw in REM frontman Michael Stipe as a mousy railroad worker, the late, great character actor Henry Gibson and a few restored steam trains from nearby Jamestown and you’ve got a very unique window into Yosemite’s past. The style of this black-and-white indie film from 1996 evokes a different era of filmmaking not unlike the trains themselves: It may not be the fastest way to go, but it sure is fun getting there.
